But motivation only explains what the monster wants. Disposition, on the other hand, is a way to help understand the general attitude of the monster, and how they interact with others. This again is because alignment alone (even dual axis alignment) doesn't really help a DM in knowing how to play a monster during encounters.

Many of you may have seen the alternate Reaction tables I created (that appear both in Petty Gods: Expanded Edition and RS1: Fang, Faith, and Legerdemain B/X Rules Supplement. The idea is that Reactions table can be created around Dispositions, with extremely good and bad reactions stemming from that Disposition. E.g., a bad reaction from a Passive creature shouldn't be the same as a bd reaction from an Aggressive creature. Below is an example of a custom Reaction table around a Passive creature (the Álainn, from the Creature Cache).

You'll see there's a noticeable correlation between many of the alignments and the Dispositions, but there's a nuance in some of these Dispositions that alignment doesn't capture (e.g., consider the differences between a True Neutral animal that is Aggressive vs. Passive, or a Lawful Good humanoid that is Friendly vs. Passive, or a Chaotic Evil fiend that is Aggressive vs. Manipulative.

DISPOSITION provides a general reference for the way a monster of that type typically interacts with other creatures around them, though it may vary among individual creatures of that type. Disposition is the main factor when determining a monster’s Reaction during an encounter. Following are the standard Dispositions, though the DM may develop their own.

Friendly. Friendly creatures will generally approach other creatures optimistically, unless they know those other creatures to be dangerous or hostile. Furthermore, friendly creatures with a greater intelligence can often be counted on to help the PCs or offer them assistance in some way.

Passive. Passive creatures generally prefer not to interact with other creatures, and rarely (if ever) attack. If attacked, they are more likely to flee (if they are able) than to engage.

Indifferent. Indifferent creatures have as much likelihood to interact with other creatures as avoid them altogether. They generally won’t take interact other creatures unless approached, provoked, or otherwise engaged.

Ambiguous. Ambiguous creatures are not prone to any particulary behavior, or they have unclear intentions. They are unpredictable and may act in in a number of ways, depending on the situation.

Rational. Rational creatures are unemotional and considered. They will take their time to examine the parameters of a situation before acting or reacting (if the situation allows).

Aggressive. Aggressive creatures are typically short-tempered, acting with hostility and arbitrary violence, spurred on by greed, hatred, vengeance, or bloodlust. They are likely to attack on sight, though more intelligent creatures of this ilk may weigh their chances of success in combat before engaging opponents.

Manipulative. Manipulative creatures are possibly the most dangerous of all the disposition types. They rely on cunning, guile, and deceit to achieve their goals, and may act in almost any of the manners outlined above. They are unpredictable and sometimes downright devious. They may simply be mischievous or they may be driven by darker goals. They may pretend to be an ally, only to turn on the PCs later. They may use their charm and persuasion to influence the actions of those around them, possibly even getting the PCs to turn on one another. They may even resort to intimidation or aggression if they think it will work. There is little a manipulative creature won’t do if it helps them achieve their goals.

Richard LeBlanchttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01828253174545830911noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8752950690535469488.post-66633309523177889182023-06-13T17:42:00.004-05:002023-06-13T17:42:35.056-05:00Monster Stat Concept: Motivation
On the whole, I find that alignment alone (even dual axis alignment) doesn't really help a DM in knowing how to play a monster during encounters. To that end, as part of the Expanded Creature Cache stat block, I'm playing around with the ideas of "Motivation" and "Disposition." Then, in combination with the classic Monster Manual stats (like Intelligence), you start to get a better idea of how to play the monster.

I've come up with the following as the working version of the Motivations. Dispositions will follow in a future post.

MOTIVATION describes the most common motivation(s) for the creature, most typically when encountered as a wandering monster. The actualy motivation may vary depending on the encounter and the scenario (as outlined by the DM).

Territoriality. The monster is fiercely protective of a particular area, typically attacking anyone who enters their domain.

Protection. The monster acts out mainly in defense of other creatures, either because they are charged with doing so or they are naturally inclined to do so.

Survival. The monster acts out of a desire to protect themselves, their offspring, or their territory.

Hunger. The monster is a voracious predator, driven by a need to feed on other creatures.

Greed. The monster is motivated by a desire for wealth, power, or other material possessions.

Dominance. The monster either seeks to gain or maintain control over others, typically through fear or manipulation.

Vengeance. Monsters may seek retribution against those who have wronged them, either in the past or in the present.

Loyalty. The monster is likely to serve a powerful master or follow a particular ideology, acting out of a sense of duty or obligation.

Curiosity. The monster may be driven by a desire to explore, learn, or understand the world around them.

Insanity. Some monsters may be driven by madness, chaos, or a desire to cause destruction for its own sake.

Richard LeBlanchttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01828253174545830911noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8752950690535469488.post-88814360400605872582023-06-09T07:46:00.008-05:002023-06-09T07:52:43.244-05:00Did you know I wrote a Universal/Generic RPG in the 1980s?
...and that the free PDF version has been downloaded nearly 14,000 times since it was "re-released" back in 2011?

It's been a while since I mentioned The System around these parts. The System is the universal RPG that I originally wrote as a high-schooler in 1985, abandoned when I realized GURPS had hit the market, then finally resurrected when I discovered the OSR back in the early part of 2011 (though had yet to understand what a retro-clone was... which The System is definitely not).
If you've never heard of The System, it was actually the first New Big Dragon RPG product ever published (in the early months of 2011), and the one that set the ball in motion for what I've done since. Below is how the "original edition" appeared in the mid 80s (on the left) and how it appears now in the "25th Anniversary Edition" (on the right). I suppose I should start getting ready for the 40th Anniversary Edition in 2026.

I'm quite willing to admit the game has its flaws... I mean, c'mon, I was 16 or 17 when I wrote it. (e.g., there is a very convoluted constitution-to-hit-point system, and there is an innovative but ultimately ill-conceived initiative and movement tracking system, and while it purports to handle supers among its genres, I can't claim that it actually scales to reflect the expanse of power levels between the weakest and strongest heroes). But over time, I have more and more appreciation for the fact that it uses d6s only, and led to some underlying things that Welbo and I would like to see become part of a "2nd Edition" of The System. (Should we ever get back to it.)

There have been some interesting developments over the last ten or twelve years. For example, it was poised to become a guy in Brazil's replacement for GURPS. I've also received several emails over the years with people asking about using the underlying system as a framework for other games (both tabletop and computer-based), though nothing has ever materialized from those inquiries.
But that's a meaty bite to chew, especially with the demands of work, life, love, other projects, etc.

So instead, I'm releasing nearly as originally planned. I say "nearly" because I had originally planned to print it as a saddle stitched book to make the feel of the original B/X rulebooks. However, time conspires, so it will be a perfect bound book instead. I'm waiting on proof copies (will take a couple of weeks), and will look to release it just before my new work semester starts in full force (2nd-3rd week of January).

Here's the finalized Table of Contents.

Richard LeBlanchttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01828253174545830911noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8752950690535469488.post-69306903136016990762022-12-22T13:40:00.001-06:002022-12-22T13:40:17.374-06:00Who are these men and what are they doing?

Richard LeBlanchttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01828253174545830911noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8752950690535469488.post-84691048560142718922022-11-22T20:21:00.003-06:002022-11-24T14:22:28.771-06:00How to Become a Werewolf (Write-up)
The person desirous of becoming a werewolf must be in earnest and believer in the power of spirits of nature (druidic magic).

The first thing they must do is go to an uninhibited natural location like an expansive desert, a dense and secluded forest, or the top of a distant mountain, on a night when the moon is new and strong.

On a perfectly level piece of ground, at midnight, they must make a circle of not less than 7’ in radius and, within this, another circle 3’ in radius. This bladed functions as a +1 dagger, takes 4 weeks to manufacture, and costs 2,000 gp. The same blade made be used to make any number of mummies.

Mummification tools. These blessed tools (hooks, scoops, etc.), take 2 weeks to manufacture, and costs 1,000 gp. A new set is required after being used to make 10 mummies (whether successful or unsuccessful).

Canopic jars. Creation of each of these inscribed clay jars made in the likeness of a god takes 2 weeks and costs 1,000 gp (8 weeks and 4,000 gp total). Four new jars are required each time a new mummy is created.

Canopic chest. Manufacture of this inscribed wooden chest designed to hold the 4 canopic jars takes 4 weeks and costs at least 2,000 gp. It costs 500 gp and takes 1 week to prepare. A new bundle of cloth and pot of gum is required each time a new mummy is made.

Other non-magical materials. The ritual also requires a number of mundane items, including palm wine, incense, and a number of sweet-smelling materials like flowers and fragrant herbs (100 gp).

Spell Requirements

The ritual requires the use of the following spells, all of which must be cast by a cleric of at least 9th level. Additionally, because of the number of spells required by level, it is likely the cleric performing the ritual will need to have many (if not all) of them prepared ahead of time as scrolls.

Prayer of protection. This is a 4th level cleric spell specific to mummy-making that must be cast 4 times during the ritual by cleric performing the ritual.

Animate dead and raise dead. These two spells must be cast simultaneously upon the prepared body. The latter must be cast by the name-level cleric performing the ritual. The former may be cast as a 3rd level spell by a cleric of 6th level or higher.

Preparation of the Body

The removal and preparation of the organs outlined below takes 1d4+4 hours. Furthermore, the cleric performing the ritual must have a minimum Dexterity of 13 or the ritual will fail.

To begin the ritual for mummification, the body is first laid out on the table. The spellcaster uses a hammer to chisel through the bone of the nose. The brains are then withdrawn through the nostrils using an iron hook. Any remaining bits of brain matter are then removed with a long scoop. Finally, the skull is rinsed with unholy water. The brain is then disposed of, as it is unnecessary to the preservation of the mummy’s life as undead.

Using the sacred blade, a small incision is made along the left side of the body, and the abdominal organs are removed. Each one, save for the kidneys, are set aside. The lungs are then removed. The heart, being the core of a person, the seat of emotions and the mind, is left in the body.

The abdominal organs and lungs must be washed with unholy water, then coated in the incensed resin, wrapped in linen strips and placed the canopic jars.

The lungs are placed in a canopic jar made in the representation of Hapi, the baboon-headed god representing the north. A prayer of protection is then made to the goddess Nepthys as the accompanying hieroglyphic inscription is made upon the jar’s exterior.

The stomach is placed in a canopic jar made in the representation of Duamutef, the jackal-heaed god representing the east. A prayer of protection is then made to the goddess Neith as the accompanying hieroglyphic inscription is made upon the jar’s exterior (requiring a successful attempt by the wenwet using the copy scroll/spell ability).

The liver is placed in a canopic jar made in the representation of Imseti, the human-headed god representing the south. A prayer of protection is then made to the goddess Isis as the accompanying hieroglyphic inscription is made upon the jar’s exterior.

The intestines are then placed in a canopic jar made in the representation of Qebehsenuef, the falcon-headed god representing the wet. A prayer of protection is then made to the goddess Selket as the accompanying hieroglyphic inscription is made upon the jar’s exterior.

The four canopic jars are then placed in canopic chest.

The empty chest cavity of the body is then rinsed with palm wine and and blessed before being filled with the incense and other sweet-smelling materials.

The body is then steeped for 3 days in the saltwater bath. After the steeping is complete, the body is washed with purfied water, at which point it is ready for swathing. The body is then wrapped in the blessed gummed cotton cloth.

Finally, to prepare the mummy for its undeath, two clerics must simultaneously casting upon the prepared mummy, with one cleric casting the spell animate dead, and the other casting the spell raise dead.

The body is then laid in a tomb with the canopic chest (and jars). If the entire process has been followed correctly, and each step has succeeded as outlined, the mummy will rise to “life” (as undead) in 4d6 days from the time the ritual has been completed.

Because the brain is removed as part of the mummification process, a mummy’s will is corrupted, resulting in its evil disposition.

Richard LeBlanchttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01828253174545830911noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8752950690535469488.post-39777123089710732952022-07-14T13:40:00.003-05:002022-07-14T13:40:15.658-05:00Coming Soon... Based on the "Stock Gods" from the TV Tropes website, I've put together a Pantheon Worksheet listing out the major "stock" gods for a generic pantheon, with some extra spaces at the bottom for additional and/or petty gods that might be worth noting.

But mainly thank you to all those who read my blog, enjoy my posts, and encourage me to keep it coming!

It continues to be a privilege to be part of such a wonderful group of people.
Richard LeBlanchttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01828253174545830911noreply@blogger.com15
